Passing the black belt test is an experience any martial artist will remember for a lifetime. They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You began your martial arts adventure by showing up to practice that first day. Now you have to survive to the end. But the road to black belt is in some sense a journey of attrition. Many who started training when you did will not be there when you take your black belt test.
By definition, martial arts focus on training armed and unarmed techniques for self-defense, sport, and combat. Over time you will become proficient with the basic techniques while knowing the techniques is an obvious, tangible part of the black belt, there is an important intangible component that is just as critical. Some call this grit, courage, or character. it's that quality that keeps someone from quitting in a fight - never giving up.

If you are doing martial arts just to get a black belt, you are missing the point and will likely fail in your attempt. The belt is a reminder of the tremendous growth you've made while training in your art - becoming fit, learning technique, gaining confidence, becoming disciplined, showing respect, overcoming mental and physical challenges - all important life skills that make you into a better person.

It's the mountains you climb while on your black belt journey that should be your focus and your reward.

Many people believe that earning a black belt is the end of their training. This is simply not true. A black belt put simply, is the first major goal to achieve in your martial arts career. 1st-degree black belt is really just where the training of the mind begins. You have spent the last several years training your physical body to obey your commands. Now you can begin to train your mind to obey your commands.

A black belt is someone who at all times carries themselves with integrity. They are an example of how to be. A black belt should have enough emotional control to not lose their temper quickly. They should be respectful. A black belt doesn’t have to prove themselves to anyone.

If a situation arises they should be able to resolve it quickly and efficiently. A black belt should be a much better negotiator than someone who is untrained. Most physical conflicts actually blossom due to lack of confidence and the presence of fear. As a black belt, you will be more prepared to handle such situations.

The true meaning of a Black Belt is less about the strength of our bodies, and more about the strength of our minds and hearts. A black belt is also a white belt that did not quit.
